Mount Cameroon is one of the world’s most beautiful and isolated mountains. With an elevation of 4,040 meters (13,250 feet), it is one of only two volcanoes in Africa that are above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). Some other beautiful mountain are Mera Peak, Ojos del salado, Island peak and Aconcagua, K2, Everest, Manaslu, Lobuche, Ama Dablam.
The mountain is roughly 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) from the equator and covers approximately 3,000 square kilometers (1,159 square miles). Its six peaks are named for the main ethnic groups in Cameroon: Ewondo on the northeast side; Ndutu on the southern side; Nyong on the southwest side; Ngwera on the west side; Mbambe in central Cameroon; and Buea on the southeast side.
In addition to hiking Mount Cameroon’s trails, visitors can go horseback riding or explore their surrounding nature reserves. The surrounding area has a diverse ecosystem with many rare animals like chimpanzees, gorillas and elephants living here.
Mount Cameroon National Park offers visitors many activities including hiking trails which go through forests filled with wildlife such as monkeys and apes as well as birds like eagles. Mount Cameroon National Park is located in the north-eastern part of Cameroon. It covers an area of 2,000 square kilometers and contains many different habitats, including grasslands, swamps and mangroves. The park’s plant and animal life include many endangered species such as monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas. Many other mountains also have National Park.
Mount Cameroon National Park is home to some of Cameroon’s most well-known tourist attractions including Mount Oku mountain range and Lake Nyos. Both these mountains have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
It’s about 350 kilometers from Yaoundé and requires a fair amount of driving time as well as some hiking along the way. There are plenty of hotels and lodges that serve as places to stay while visiting Mount Cameroon, but they tend to be expensive. A good alternative is renting a car and driving yourself there if you’re in search of an adventure!
If you fly into Douala, the capital city of Cameroon, you will be able to take a flight from there to Ngaoundéré. From Ngaoundéré, you can then take a shuttle van to Mt. Cameroon. The shuttle van will leave every morning at 7:30 AM and return at 9:30 PM.
If you choose to take a bus instead of a plane, then you should make sure that you book your tickets well in advance so that they are available when necessary (i.e., if there is bad weather). There are many different companies that offer bus services between Douala and Ngaoundéré (and/or Mt. Cameroon) as well as other places around Cameroon such as Bamenda and Yaoundé; but all would be considered one-way trips unless otherwise noted on your ticket purchase (e.g., “return ticket”).
