Things to know before choosing your internet service

In today’s world having a constant connection to the internet is an absolute must.

For those making the jump, you might be overwhelmed with the choices available. There are a dozen or so ISPs, and each one could be offering something different.

To make your decision easier, here are 5 things to know before choosing your internet service.

How Do You Intend To Use The Internet?

Usage will dictate just how much speed you need (and the overall price you’ll pay). So, the first question should be- how do you intend to use it?

For casual browsing, occasional gaming and chatting with friends on social media, it’s recommended to get speeds of up to 10mbps. On the other hand, if you’re planning to work from home, download large files and go on video streaming binges then it’s recommended that you get speeds up to 100mbps.

Unlimited or With Data Caps?

Subscribers get two choices- opt for a data cap and you can save money if you use your internet wisely, or spend a bit more and you can get unlimited data.

Keep in mind that plans with data caps can end up costing you more, as there are per mb overages when you exceed your limit. With an unlimited plan however, you’re free to use as much data and still pay a flat rate each month.

Internet Only or Bundle?

Most companies are offering bundled deals for internet, mobile services or cable. You can try to see if you can get additional savings by opting to get bundle on essential services.

On the other hand, a bundle shouldn’t mean that it’s a must-have. If you’re fine with just internet then that’s well and good. TV, news and video content can be found online anyway.

However, if a bundle is important then you should consider companies that offer them high up on your list. Mediacom bundles can save you money, especially the more you add.

Included Modem or New Router?

You may need to purchase additional hardware, especially if you’re planning to get the highest packaged internet plans.

To take full advantage of your internet speed you might need to invest in a new router. Most modems that come with ISP installation are often not enough to reach your internet speed’s true potential.

Shopping around for a new router is another thing you have to deal with, but it’s worth it in the end. Take your time and see what features you need, such as dual-band, beamforming technology or mesh, among others.

Wireless or Wired?

Last but not least, you can choose to setup your internet as wired or wireless.

A wired connection is recommended for business conference calls and if you don’t want to be disconnected, but it does come with additional hardware requirements. However, you get faster and more stable speeds and consistency compared to wireless.

Wireless is more convenient and lets you move from one room to another. You won’t be hassled with wires, but you get sub-optimal speeds compared to a wired connection.
